Allied Health Sciences: UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH & ALLIED SCIENCES
SAHS(Allied Health Sciences) is one of the six schools in the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) located at Ho, the capital of the Volta Region of Ghana. UHAS is a public university created in 2012 by an Act of Parliament. The mandate of SAHS is to train and develop highly qualified, competent and confident allied health professionals to meet the nation’s demand through the provision of academic and professional knowledge.The School supports the mission of the university and seeks to be a pre-eminent health research educational institution dedicated to community service. SAHS shall realise this vision by taking modern approaches to research, teaching and engagement with society, informed by a culture of scholarship, academic and service excellence.
The School currently runs five Bachelor programmes; Medical Laboratory Sciences; Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Sciences; Nutrition and Dietetics; Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences and Medical Imaging Sciences (Radiography). Other programmes to be run by the school in the near future include Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management, Biomedical Instrumentation Management, and Postgraduate programmes (MSc., MPhil & PhD). SAHS is endowed with excellent and skilled academic and professional staff who deliver high quality curriculum and programs to students and also offer support to students in the area of research scholarship, and professional practice.
The School is situated in the Volta Regional hospital; the leading referral hospital in the region. The unique location of SAHS provides our students with an easy access to the facilities and medical equipment of the Regional hospital where they can have practical clinical experience under the supervision of qualified and competent allied health professionals. The future job prospects of our graduates are very high and in extremely high demand.
PhD & MPhil in Medical Imaging Begin in UHAS
The School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS) of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) on Wednesday, September 12, 2025, organized an orientation programme for its maiden postgraduate students at the SBBS Auditorium, UHAS Main Campus, Sokode-Lokoe, Ho.
The orientation forms part of the University’s annual academic programmes aimed at ushering newly admitted students into the University and to educate them on the mandate of the University, provide them with the basic rules and regulations that govern students as well as their duties and responsibilities.
Students admitted for the four (4)-year full-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Medical Imaging and two (2)-year full-time / three (3)-year part-time Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programmes in Medical Imaging at the Department of Medical Imaging of School of Allied Health Sciences participated in the orientation exercise.
The PhD in Medical Imaging programme is the first of its kind to be introduced in UHAS. The programme aims at training high calibre of Medical Imaging professionals, who can rise to the highest levels of Medical Imaging Sciences in order to better contribute to policy formulation, implementation and evaluation. The programme is also meant to provide the required foundation for students to pursue their terminal degrees in Medical Imaging in order to develop the requisite faculty for Medical Imaging programmes in Ghana and beyond.
The Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Professor John Owusu Gyapong, in his address, welcomed the students into the University and advised them to have quizzical minds, be research focused and be disciplined enough with their studies to enable them complete their studies on time.
The Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, Professor Eric Kwasi Ofori, presented the structure of the postgraduate programme to the students and advised them to take their studies seriously and be good ambassadors of the School in particular and the University at large
Dr John Tampuori, the Medical Director of the Volta Regional Hospital, who also doubles as a faculty of UHAS, among other things advised the students to be friends with the Volta Regional Hospital and make the hospital their primary learning ground.
Professor Margaret Gyapong, the Acting Director of UHAS Institute of Health Research on her part said, the preoccupation of postgraduate students should be research. She then urged the students to consider research topics that will at the end help improve upon health delivery.
The Registrar was duly represented by the Director of Academic Affairs, Mrs Lucy Brimpong Ofori Ayeh, who admonished the students to be diligent in their studies and make sure they always abide by the rules and regulations of the University, even as the University plays its part in guaranteeing them a conducive atmosphere.
Present at the occasion were Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments and some other Senior Administrative Staff of the University.
