Trinity Theological Seminary

The Trinity Theological Seminary, Legon, Ghana, was founded in November 1942 in Kumasi as an Ecumenical endeavor for the training of ministers. The pioneering founders were the Methodist Church Ghana, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana. These were later joined by the Accra Diocese of the Joint Anglican Diocesan Council (now the Africa Internal Province of Ghana) and the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. The Legon Campus where the Seminary is located now was opened in 1964. The Seminary has also expanded its programs over the years and opened its doors to admit many students from non-sponsoring churches including the independent churches and Pentecostal/charismatic communions. The range of programs have developed from the original Licentiate in Theology to Certificate in Ministry, Diploma in Theology, Bachelor of Theology, Master of Divinity, Master of Theology, Doctor of Ministry and Doctor of Philosophy in Theology.

The Trinity Theological Seminary is now fully chartered by the Government of Ghana through the National Accreditation Board to award its its own degrees as a tertiary institution. We have a student population of over 700 offering our various programs including Certificate in Ministry, Bachelor of Theology, Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Ministry, Master of Theology, Doctor of Ministry and Doctor of Philosophy in Theology. The meanings of the various insignia and symbols of the Seminary are as follows:

• Logo and Motto: It consists of the “chi rho” (transliteration) which is the sign revealed to Emperor Constantine in 312 accompanied by the words In Hoc Signo Vince, meaning, “In this Sign (of the Cross) Conquer.” At the Trinity Theological Seminary, we preach “Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (I Corinthians 2:2), a message that is “foolishness to those who are perishing but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God” (I Corinthians 1:18).
• Seminary Staff: A wooden pole with a serpent around it and a dove perching on top of it. It is a symbolic imagery of Jesus’ words to the disciples as he sent them out on mission: “See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16).
• Seminary Chapel: Designed with a “praying hands” roof, the chapel is located at the center of the Seminary and it is meant to indicate the fact that, worship’ is at the heart of all we do. Students meet every week day morning and evening for worship with our main chapel service taking place on Wednesday evening. The Trinity Theological Seminary is a very vibrant and dynamic place for theological study. Our faculty is unique because each of us studied at the Seminary and also took some theological degree abroad. This helps us to bring together local and international experiences in the training and formation of ministers and Christian leaders.
